Peugeot Electric Cars Gain More Range
Recent advancements in battery technology have significantly enhanced the range of Peugeot's E-3008 and E-5008 models. On October 12, 2023, it was announced that these models are now equipped with a new 97 kWh battery, available in select conditions, marking a leap forward for Stellantis, the group that includes brands like Fiat, Citroën, Opel, and Peugeot, in terms of electric vehicle (EV) range capabilities.
Enhanced Battery and Range
Previously limited by their battery capacities and charging speeds, Stellantis' earlier electric vehicles offered only modest long-range capabilities. The newly introduced batteries boast a notable net capacity of 96.9 kWh, supporting a peak charging power of 160 kW. This improvement allows the E-3008 to achieve up to 698 km on the WLTP cycle, while the E-5008 can reach up to 664 km. For those estimating an average consumption of 20 kWh per 100 km, this equates to approximately 450 km of range, with additional buffer room for peace of mind.
Charging Speed Improvements
The new battery setup notably reduces charging times significantly. While Stellantis models may not yet lead the market in fast charging, the new system features an enhanced charging capability, allowing a charge from 20% to 80% in just 27 minutes. This is achieved by maintaining an average net charging power of 129.2 kW in this range. Furthermore, under optimal conditions, adding 150 km of WLTP range would take only about 10 minutes of charging.
Conditional Battery Preconditioning
Stellantis introduces battery preconditioning, albeit conservatively. This system prepares the battery cells to withstand high charging power across various temperatures. Critical in both summer and winter, the current iteration is available exclusively for the larger 96.9 kWh battery. The preconditioning activates only when certain criteria are met: the car must be plugged in, set for a complete 100% charge, and the interior must be pre-conditioned. By May 2025, the automaker plans to allow this feature during travel, enhancing its usability.
Competitive Market Pricing
Priced competitively within the EV market, the E-3008 starts at €52,750, with the larger E-5008 priced slightly higher at €55,250. This positions Peugeot’s offerings alongside models like the VW ID.4 GTX and Tesla Model Y, which offer similar features and performance. Moreover, the upcoming Opel Grandland, also within the Stellantis family, is anticipated to be priced similarly with its enhanced battery option.
Peugeot's latest advancements emphasize a substantial progression in their electric vehicle offerings, promising enhanced range and better charging efficiency. This development showcases Stellantis's commitment to advancing its position within the competitive landscape of electric mobility.
