Impressed by the testing data of the caps, Guy encouraged their adoption by the Gamecocks football team, including first-overall NFL draft pick Jadeveon Clowney, during the 2013 summer practices. The success with South Carolina soon caught the eye of rival teams, including Clemson, demonstrating a ripple effect that would expand the cap's presence further.

“It really was one team giving it a shot, and it just kept spreading,” Erin Hanson recalled, highlighting the grassroots growth of the product.

Evolution of Guardian Caps

With increasing recognition, the Hansons rebranded from POC Ventures to Guardian, incorporating a halo logo inspired by their religious beliefs, later changing it to an angel's wing for a more secular representation. Their steadfast belief in their mission paid off when the NFL sponsored research competition, the HeadHealthTECH challenge, awarded them $20,000. This prize was allocated toward future biomechanical testing at Biokinetics, an Ottawa-based lab collaborating with the NFL on equipment safety.

While the Guardian XT, a 7-ounce soft shell model, gained popularity among college and high school teams, it didn't meet the lab benchmarks required for the NFL. According to Ann Bailey Good, a senior engineer at Biocore, the cap had little effect within the NFL's rigorous impact environment.

The Guardian Cap’s path exemplifies the challenges and advancements in sports safety innovation. Despite setbacks in meeting professional standards, the device continues to symbolize a significant step towards increasing awareness and protection against head injuries in football.
