Enhanced External Display Support Announced for New M4 MacBook Pro Models

Apple has unveiled its latest MacBook Pro models, powered by the innovative M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips. Released on October 30, 2024, these new models bring substantial enhancements in terms of external display support, a key feature for many users. Here’s what you need to know about these updates.

M4 and M4 Pro Models

For Mac users looking for improved display capabilities, the M4 and M4 Pro chips unify their external display support features. Both can now seamlessly support the MacBook's built-in display and:

  • Two External Displays: Users can connect two displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz using Thunderbolt, or one display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and an additional display with up to 4K resolution at 144Hz via HDMI.
  • High-Resolution Support: An option for one external display with 8K resolution at 60Hz or a 4K display at 240Hz using HDMI is available.

This marks a significant improvement over the previous M3 base model, enhancing support that originally allowed just one external display with the laptop lid open and two with it closed.

M4 Max Model

The advancements do not stop there. The M4 Max chip-equipped MacBook Pro can simultaneously handle multiple displays alongside the built-in screen, offering:

  • Four External Displays: Support for up to three displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz via Thunderbolt, and an additional display with up to 4K resolution at 144Hz using HDMI.
  • Diverse Configurations: Alternatively, support for up to two displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt, alongside one 8K resolution display at 60Hz or another 4K display at 240Hz via HDMI.

These specs remain consistent with the M3 Max model, ensuring continuity in top-tier display capabilities.
