Apple's Pro Display XDR: Aging Tech with a Premium Price Tag

In December, Apple’s Pro Display XDR celebrates a milestone – its fifth year in the market. Despite its age, the high-end display continues to be sold at a premium price. Apple’s persistence in keeping the Pro Display XDR unchanged raises eyebrows, as the device still lacks the trendy upgrades seen in newer models.

Pricey Affair

The Pro Display XDR remains a costly investment. Even today, purchasing the standard glass version directly from Apple sets you back €5,499, while the nanotexture glass option costs €6,499. Moreover, if you wish to mount the display, the VESA mount adds an extra €219 to your bill. Alternatively, the famously luxury Pro Stand, which has become a meme of sorts, will add a hefty €1,099.

Market Alternatives

For budget-conscious consumers, it's worth noting that prices in retail have seen slight softening. The standard glass can be found for under €5,000, and the nanotexture version starts around €5,829. Deals on the Pro Stand might also be found, sometimes dropping below €930, if you’re willing to hunt for bargains or check auction sites like eBay.

Stubbornly Unchanged

Despite anticipation, Apple shows no sign of releasing a successor. Rumors over the years have hinted at newer versions, potentially including enhancements like ProMotion and mini-LED technology in its Studio Display sibling. However, these whispers have yet to materialize into an update. Similar to other products, like the now-outdated Mac Pro, which stayed on the market unchanged for years due to customer demand, Apple seems content with the status quo.

Anticipating Future Upgrades

Looking forward, the tech giant is expected to refresh its professional line of computers with the upcoming M4 SoC processor. This update might finally bring changes to the Mac Pro and Mac Studio line-ups. Nevertheless, without official announcements, it's all speculation.

Maintaining old hardware might be part of Apple’s strategy, but it certainly leaves tech enthusiasts eager for more innovation and affordability from one of the industry's biggest players.
