Apple Intelligence Now Accessible on Windows via Parallels Desktop

Introduction

In a significant development as of October 2023, users can now access Apple Intelligence features, previously exclusive to macOS, on Windows operating systems through the popular virtualization software Parallels Desktop. This transition allows Windows users to benefit from Apple's AI capabilities after installing the latest version of Parallels Desktop, along with the necessary configurations on a Mac.

Requirements for Setup

To utilize Apple’s Writing Tools in Windows applications such as Word and PowerPoint, users must first ensure that their Mac is running macOS 15.1 or later, also known as the Sequoia update. Notably, Apple Intelligence requires the system language on the Mac to be set to US English. For the Parallels Desktop application to function correctly, the most recent version of its tools must be installed on the Windows virtual machine (VM).

Using Apple Writing Tools on Windows

Once the setup is complete and proper updates are installed, Windows users can seamlessly access Apple’s Writing Tools. This can be done via the menu bar under "Edit" or through a keyboard shortcut (Shift + Command + W). The Writing Tools will appear as a pop-up, enabling features such as proofreading English texts, rephrasing content in various tones (like friendly, professional, or concise), as well as generating summaries, extracting key points, and creating lists or tables.

Considerations for Administrators

It's important to note that for these functionalities to operate efficiently, the Windows VM should not be isolated from macOS, as some system administrators might recommend due to security concerns. This integration could potentially lead to further advancements and more functionalities in how Apple Intelligence can be utilized on Windows.

Future Prospects and Availability

Looking ahead, Alludo (formerly known as Corel) is expected to introduce additional Apple Intelligence features for Windows users, enhancing the capabilities available through Parallels Desktop. Apple has plans to roll out other AI functionalities, including its unique image generators. The current image editing tool known as "Clean Up" is available solely in the Photos app on macOS and is anticipated to reach the EU by April 2025, along with support for the German language. For those intrigued, Parallels Desktop is available for subscription starting at €8.33 per month and supports various operating systems, including Linux and macOS VMs.
