Introduction

The latest Apple iMac (M4, 2024) has been unveiled, bringing enhancements that are likely to intrigue both existing Apple users and potential buyers. Released recently, the iMac M4 offers various configurations and upgrades, aimed at improving user experience in multitasking, creativity, and engagement.

Configuration Options

Starting at a price of $1,299, the base model of the iMac M4 comes equipped with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. However, it’s worth noting that this model still features only two Thunderbolt 4 ports, lacking the latest Thunderbolt 5 connectivity available on other Apple offerings like the MacBook Pro. Fortunately, it now supports two 6K external displays instead of just one, enhancing its potential for professional use. Additionally, buyers should be mindful that accessories, such as the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, do come at an extra cost.

Upgraded Performance

For those willing to spend more, various upgrade options are available. My personal test model, which was $1,000 more expensive at $2,299, included a 10-core CPU and GPU, 24 GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage, and multiple USB ports, with the added benefit of gigabit Ethernet through the power brick. One specific upgrade that stands out is the nano-texture glass option for the 24-inch display. Priced at $200, this feature minimizes glare and transforms the display into a crystal-clear visual experience. Yet, it leaves many questioning why Apple has not included a touchscreen feature, which is quite common in competing all-in-one PCs.

Enhanced Visual and Audio Features

The new iMac M4 also boasts a remarkable 12-megapixel webcam, a significant improvement from the 2.1-megapixel version found in the previous M3 model. It introduces the innovative Center Stage feature, which keeps the user in focus during video calls, along with the newly developed Desk View feature that provides a unique overhead angle for educational contexts. Despite these advancements, the audio setup remains consistent with its predecessor, offering a smooth experience with three microphones and six speakers.

Remaining Concerns

Despite the improvements, there are still some pitfalls that exist in this model. One notable omission is the lack of screen height adjustability, a feature that many users feel should be standard. While Apple provides a tilt feature, taller users may find it inadequate. Moreover, the price remains a contentious point; even the base model is notably pricier than many alternative smaller all-in-ones, raising questions about its competitiveness in the market.

Conclusion

Overall, prospective buyers must weigh the benefits of upgrading to the new iMac M4 against the relatively high cost associated with it. For those already using an earlier Apple silicon iMac, the decision hinges on individual needs and financial considerations. The enhancements made in the 2024 edition may not be compelling enough for everyone to trade in their current models, leaving potential buyers to consult their budget-savvy advisors.
